Is ramadan only about fasting?

February 26, 2026Saddiq1 views

Most people think that Ramadan is simply a month of fasting for Muslims. However, Ramadan is much more than that—it encompasses various elements where Muslims engage not only in fasting but also in many other spiritual and communal activities. These include compulsory charity (Zakat), abstaining from sexual relations during fasting hours, performing regular prayers, and offering additional congregational prayers known as Taraweeh.

These practices are not only meant to restrain the body from food and physical needs but also to cultivate self-control, empathy, gratitude, quality family time, and active participation in community development. The spirit of Ramadan brings families together. People rush home to break their fast with loved ones. The atmosphere of the month encourages everyone to wake early for Suhoor (pre-dawn meal) and gather for Iftar each evening. Personally, I do not usually have much time to share breakfast or meals with family members on other days. However, during Ramadan, I have the most gatherings with family and relatives—where we not only eat together but also engage in the entire process of meal preparation and sharing.

For those who are unable to be with family, many rush to the mosque to break their fast together. At the mosque, community members donate money for food, volunteer to manage the venue, and take on duties such as cleaning and crowd management. All of these tasks are carried out on a voluntary basis, reflecting the strong sense of community and togetherness that defines Ramadan.
